Discount Shopping UK, a website for finding discount voucher codes for many UK shops and retailers, are launching a new tv price comparison service which is of interest to us because it should compare and find the cheapest TV prices.

Currently you can compare prices on thousands of electrical products and it isn’t limited to just televisions. We’re also informed the price comparison features are soon due to include Books, DVDs, Music and Video Games.

In the TV section there are LCD, Plasma and LED TVs from over 20 of the UK’s leading online stores and many of the leading brand names . All of the prices are sorted by the cheapest first and there’s information on delivery time, availablity and delivery costs.

The Discount Shopping UK editor said:

We’re hoping this is going to be a big improvement to our current website features! We currently help hundreds of shoppers save money each day money when using the discount codes with our listed stores. We try to gauge what’s popular with our users and with all the recent economic climate changes and people having to watch what they spend even more so as a result, we knew we were missing something. On inspection we found that by offering price comparison services alongside discount codes we could further help anyone who visits the website to find a better deal. Not all services are live yet and we are ironing out glitches and bugs as we go along.

The shown prices on the site aren’t listed in real time and we’re lead to believe that is a big drain on Internet resources and would slow down the serving of results to the user, instead the prices are taken from retailer feeds together with delivery and stock availablity. Most of the information is only a few hours old when taken this way and at most it’s a few days old. But we’ve found a very high rate of accuracy in the prices listed when checking out the service and very much like the simple layout and especially the fact we can see by how much the cheapest price differs from the most expensive.

So if you’d like to compare TV prices, buy cheap LCD TVs, Plasma or LED TVs, or make sure you get the best price on a more upmarket model then it’s worth checking the website out. It doesn’t matter what type of TV you are looking for or how much you want to spend, we are sure it will help find some of the better LCD, Plasma or LED TV deals available. Don’t forget you can also currently compare many other electrical items such as fridges, freezers, vacuum cleaners and more. If in any doubt simply do as we did and use the search box in the electrical goods section to find what you’re looking for.

Launching Picnic on terrestrial TV would have seen Sky’s current free channels on Freeview replaced by Sky Sports 1, Sky Movies and with Sky One sharing space with offerings from channels such as Discovery and Disney.
The delay in launching Sky Picnic has happened because Ofcom has yet to approve the Sky Picnic service while it is still awaiting the results of an investigation into the pay TV market. These results are expected to be published in 2009.

Freeview High Definition to be available next year!

Ofcom has announced that it’s allowing high definition TV channels to be transmitted on the Freeview terrestrial TV platform next year, in 2009. The new channels, 3 in total, will be available to any viewer with adequate reception, a HD ready TV and an additional Freeview set top box or receiver. There will also be a further 4th channel available by 2012 – just in time for the Olympics.

There is only one downside to this announcement, if you can call it that, you will have to wait until conventional analogue TV is switched off/switched over to digital TV in your area. This means viewers in the Wales, Granada and Borders regions will be able to access the HD TV channels whilst those yet to be switched to digital will have to wait until their area is digital TV only.

Switchover By Region

Border

2008/9

Granada, West Country

2009

2009/10

STV Central & North, West

Anglia, Central, Yorkshire

2011

2012

If you are unsure which TV Region you come under it is the same as your ITV regional news, and analogue ITV Teletext on page 106.

More information on when your area switches over is available at the Freeview website.

Technical insights into the new high definition channels are being kept quiet at the moment, but it looks like the current main BBC multiplex will be moved/reshuffled to make room for the new channels; and it would seem likely the BBC will have one HD channel with the other slots being offered for bidding between the regular commercial TV channels.
