I think that manufactures should remove the stand by feature. If its not there to be used then no one will be tempted. I always switch off by the plug and I think it takes just as much effort as putting the device onto standby mode.

This is good news if manufacturers really make efforts to produce energy efficient equipment. Just like cars where they evolved from gas-guzzling vehicles to almost sipping ones. This can be done.

Consumer awareness - Taking the time to know just exactly what the tv/xbox/cd-dvd-video player/computer/printer/fax, etc., etc., is costing (not just your pocketbook) is a responsibility everyone needs to make their own. Both sides of the Green fence have to agree with that. People need to make a difference wherever they can. Thanks for the info!

Some units are down to 1-2 watts (a lot of Tv's are in that range) but the problem seems to be PVR's and some Digital Cable boxes. I read in one spec sheet a while ago that a certain cable box was 16 watts consumption in standby.

Interesting post, I've always assumed that when the unit was in stand by it was using next to no power. Looks like I'll have to read the specs to find out.
